Sustainability at Tognola
Nature, human and technology
For people like us, who live deeply in the beauty of the Dolomites, respecting and protecting the environment, it is of primary importance. That is how we do it in Alpe Tognola.
Sustainability is in our DNA
Being sustainable has to be part of the DNA of whoever, like Alpe Tognola, takes up 50 hectares of territory, the majority of which belongs to Paneveggio Pale di San Martino Natural Park, a location with extremely high naturalistic and panoramic value.
During winter 2021, with ski resorts closed due to the pandemic, Tognola Ap has decided to measure its sustainability level. To do so and obtain the certification of SI Rating, it chose ARB SpA located in Trento and founded by Ada Rosa Balzan, today its CEO. This tool represents a rigorous sustainability measurement giving guarantees and certainties to the measurement provided by the analysis performed.

What does SI Rating mean?
SI Rating tool has been validated by RINA certification body and is based on international recognized tools, starting from SASB standards. These bodies and tolls give to the performed analysis absolute guarantee and certainty.
SI Rating has analysed and measured Funivie Seggiovie San Martino Srl, in all sectors, with reference to ESG sector-specific criteria and to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of Agenda 2030 of the United Nations; it did this by following the materiality principle. This principle is based on the importance of the different topics in relation to cable cars, catering and receptive tourism sectors.
The results obtained show a good inclination toward sustainability of the whole Group Funivie Seggiovie. Below the most relevant data.
Energy
The Company is fully powered by hydroelectric renewable energy. A biomass plant located in town produces heating and hot water. Diesel fuel is used only for snow groomers and for Rifugio Tognola located at 2200 meters above sea level, where no other solutions are applicable.
Buildings made after 2010, among which Campo Base and Langes Residence are either certified “Casa Klima” or have “A” energy class. New and old buildings have flow regulators faucets.
Environment
Almost all projects relating to Alpe Tognola ski area have been (and will be) subjected to an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) or an Incidence Assessment. Minor projects, generally territory maintenance, are in any case subjected to the so-called verification of “not subject to impact assessment”.
Any earthmoving is managed through stripping procedure, setting aside of the surface layer of the soil, that is then reposition at completion, optimally safeguarding the biodiversity present before the works.
Plastics used for fast catering has been gradually replaced with biodegradable disposable products (where disposable is necessary and / or required by law) and is no longer purchased.
Waste
The Company proceeds in collection and differentiating waste in all departments with a percentage of unsorted waste lower than 20% on total waste.
Job, welfare and local community
Annually, the company provides jobs, on average, to 40 people with picks of more than 80 hire people during winter season. 95 % of the workforce lives in the Primiero Valley.
Permanent workers have a 5-day work cycle during most of the year. Sector national contracts are applied, some of which already include welfare opportunities. In some cases, secondary level contracts are applied with bonus welfare opportunities and production premiums or end of season bonuses.
Care to trainings and safety. Associates are chosen based on competences without any gender discrimination.
Suppliers
More than 70% of suppliers is located within 200 km from the Company headquarters. Catering especially makes use of local suppliers with organic and zero miles products typical of Trentino and Primiero food and wine.
Governance
Funivie keeps trying to maintain social, economic and financial balance, adapting to the market and to the environmental and climate factors’ evolution.
Within this framework, we can find the strengthening strategy of summer season being pushed until part of fall season.
