Alpe Tognola is located just “a few steps far” from the peaks of the Lagorai mountain range, the bloody scene of hard battles between the italian and the austrian armies during World War I. As a matter of fact, the first italian frontline ran along the ridges of Cima Tognola, descended from San Martino di Castrozza to the Vanoi valley, while the austrian armies were based on the highest peaks of the Lagorai range, on the peaks of Ceremana, Colbricon and on Cima di Cece.
After the italian armies conquered the austrian frontline during Summer 1916, the Ridges of Cima Tognola became a secondary line of defense where still nowadays several ruins of the military works and structures built during those years are visible and in a good conservation status, like trenches, tunnels and fortifications. Today, an old mule track almost entirely invaded by vegetation, climbs up from Malga Tognola (a typical alpine hut) to the top of the mountain, coming up gently among little dry lakes and rhododendron plants, to finally reach the ridge and the first fortifications.
The ancient mule track and the path are well marked by specific signs which indicate the value of this historic route. Near the tunnel, the trenches and the most evident fortifications, some informative signs explain and tell the tough living conditions of the soldiers during the years of the conflict.
